Description: Ceramic
Artist: Sarah Hillman
Profile: Sarah’s Contemporary Ceramics are bold and enticing. Each piece is uniquely hand cut to evoke a dynamic tension between positive and negative space. The contours cast dramatic shadows, while the vibrant Terra-Sigillata slip on the internal surface evokes depth providing a bold contrast to the pure smooth clay exterior. This striking range offers a vibrant contemporary look to any interior setting. Statement 'I have been driven by the fluid nature of clay since the first day I worked with the medium. The possibilities seem endless; clay has its own presence and energy that I try to capture within my work. I'm fascinated by the aesthetic perception of space and form. Influenced by purity of modernism, I am inspired by the work of artists who explore these dynamics; such as the beautiful pierced forms of Barbara Hepworth and the clever perceptual disorientation in the work of Anish Kapoor. I use a lot of photography for inspiration for my work, often taking black and white images of the curves of the body working with the dramatic effects of light and shadow. Life drawing also gives me the opportunity to explore the rhythms and form of the body which are translated in the lines and contours of my work'.
